Local Flavors: 5 Must-Try Coffeehouses in Lincoln

Downtown Lincoln, Nebraska is normally known for its tailgating scene on Saturdays in the fall. It’s home to some amazing restaurants and bars that are go-to’s when they’re in town for Husker football. Maybe not as well-known are the handful of local coffeehouses that litter the downtown landscape. Scooters and Starbucks might be the first places that come to mind, but here are a handful of shops worth trying out!

The Mill

Haymarket: 800 P Street | #100 | Lincoln, NE | 68508
College View: 4736 Prescott Avenue | Lincoln, NE | 68506
Innovation Campus: 2021 Transformation Drive | Lincoln, NE | 68508

The Mill has been a staple in the Lincoln coffee community since 1975. It’s just a short walk from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln’s campus, which makes it a hot-spot for college students looking to catch up with friends and study. The Mill offers small-batch craft coffee, a wide selection of teas, and an ever-expanding food selection that includes sandwiches, muffins, cookies, and more. Oh, and its cold brew may be the best in town.

The Coffee House

1324 P Street | Lincoln, NE | 68508

Another student favorite, The Coffee House, is located in the heart of the P Street District in downtown Lincoln. Often referred to as “CoHo,” The Coffee House opened in 1987 and quickly established itself as coffee destination. Other than delicious, fresh-brewed coffee, CoHo also has multiple selections of pastries, cookies, and breakfast croissants.

Cultiva

Downtown: 727 S. 11 Street | Lincoln, NE | 68508
East Campus: 3535 Holdrege Street | Suite 130 | Lincoln, NE | 68503
Cultiva Labs: 2510 Randolph Street | Lincoln, NE | 68510

Cultiva is another local coffeehouse that has multiple locations around town. Home to delicious coffee, Culitva is also known for its made from and made to order food. I recommend the crepes. They are phenomenal! As for the coffee, it’s great too, as they serve single-orgin coffee and delicious blends and espressos.

Destinations

1345 New Hampshire Street | Lincoln, NE | 68508

In 2009, an old auto shop was converted in a coffeehouse and Destinations Coffee House was born. The shop is located just north of the University of Nebraska’s campus in a neighborhood called the North Bottoms. Destinations has a very welcoming atmosphere that accompanies the fresh cup of joe well. The shop’s free parking is huge plus considering the headache downtown parking can cause. Oh, did I mention the staff is completely comprised of volunteers?
140 N. 8 Street | Lincoln, NE | 68508

Located right across the street and hidden below street-level, Crescent Moon is a hidden gem in downtown. Opened in 2001, the shop is huge proponent of the arts, as it supports many local musicians and artists by holding multiple showcases throughout the month. The coffee and tea are some of the best in town, but if you’re looking for something with a bit of bite you can relax with a beer, wine or cocktail. Crescent Moon also offers an extensive made-to-order menu

Coffeehouse Vibes: A Social Hub Through the Ages

How do you take your coffee? Black? With cream? Iced? Or maybe you like one of those Grandé Caramel Frappuccinos. However you like it, consuming coffee has become a social event. With the rise of Starbucks, the coffeehouse has become ingrained in our culture. Today, coffeehouses differentiate themselves by promoting their bean source and how they roast it. But with all the difference in mind, coffeehouses still have one thing in common; they're a place where people socialize. Coffeehouses originated in the Middle East in the early 16 th century, where some of the earliest coffee beans were produced. The coffeehouses quickly became an important part of the culture, as they became a place for political gatherings and a place for men to gather and play games.
